Who drives the most economically? Who has the best values for the environment and the company alike? Mercedes-Benz wanted to know and set off in search of the 2019 Eco Champ among drivers of the Tourismo high-deck touring coach throughout Europe. Ulrich Bastert, Head of Marketing, Sales and Customer Service at Daimler Buses: "The result of the competition has exceeded our expectations. For our customers, the Tourismo is a true economic wonder and at the same time protects the environment."

A winner was determined for each of the four model variants which the Tourismo offers. The front-runner in the two-axle Mercedes-Benz Tourismo was Walterbus in Gorizia, north-east Italy (in the picture from left to right: Ivan Zanirato and winner Walter Marini). The company achieved the best value for the 12.3-metre-long touring coach in Europe, with a figure of just 18.8 litres/100 km. That corresponds to a value of less than 0.5 litres/100 km per seat. Autocars Vanderkerckhove from Wingene-Zwevezele in Flanders, Belgium, were at the top of the Tourismo M/2 category with its length of 13.1 metres and a mere 20.9 litres/100 km consumption. The three-axle Tourismo M/3 from Castell Reisen in Näfels in the Swiss canton of Glarus consumed barely more than that with a figure of 21.2 litres/100 km. With just 23.8 litres/100 km, the impressive 13.9-metre-long three-axle Tourismo L from Papuga A/S in Vejle, Denmark also delivered an amazing set of figures.

The drivers of the winning buses can look forward to a Mercedes-Benz mountain bike with an extra-light carbon frame. With 22 gears, its drive is equally as fine-tuned as that of the Tourismo. A bicycle helmet and a fitness tracker are also part of the prize package awaiting them. The outstanding consumption values are anything but one-offs: drivers covered at least 3000 kilometres with their Tourismo buses.

The Mercedes-Benz Tourismo is characterized by its outstanding economy. It starts with the fantastic aerodynamics and extends to the in-house powertrain and optional high-tech equipment such as the Predictive Powertrain Control (PPC) predictive cruise control system or the Eco Driver Feedback (EDF) function which provides personalised recommendations for improving driving style.
